{"id":247,"date":"2014-09-29T01:13:46","date_gmt":"2014-09-29T01:13:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sdrcd.org\/main\/?page_id=247"},"modified":"2014-11-25T22:33:06","modified_gmt":"2014-11-26T04:33:06","slug":"vermillion-projects","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sdrcd.org\/main\/vermillion-projects\/","title":{"rendered":"Vermillion &#8211; Projects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">Vermillion &#8211; Projects<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>\u00a0Clean Water Projects<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<strong>Vermillion River Watershed Restoration Project<\/strong><br \/>\nThe McCook Conservation District was awarded a Clean Water Grant of $117,000 to begin to assist landowners\u00a0in the Vermillion River Watershed to install conservation practices that reduce water pollution. During 2009<br \/>\nthis project was extended through 2011, and the budget was amended to $450,000, to include funds from\u00a0projects ending in the watershed. The Vermillion River Watershed Project will continue to assist landowners<br \/>\nwith livestock agricultural waste management, and with improving riparian areas through land use agreements,\u00a0fencing, and alternative water developments.<\/p>\n<p>The McCook Conservation District manages this project by contracting experienced staff of the South Dakota\u00a0Association of Conservation Districts. The Vermillion River Watershed has a surface area of approximately<br \/>\n1.43 million acres covering portions of fourteen eastern South Dakota counties, including all six Vermillion\u00a0River RC&amp;D Applicant area counties. The basin is about 150 miles north to south, and varies in width from 12<br \/>\nmiles in the north to 36 miles in the south. A watershed assessment of the project area was completed by the\u00a0Vermillion Valley Water Development District in 2006.<\/p>\n<p>NEW to the project for 2010 and 2011 is the Riparian Area\u00a0Management (RAM) Program that will provide land use agreements to landowners to complement the Conservation Reserve Program CP-22\u00a0Riparian Buffer or CP-30 Marginal Pastureland Wetland Buffer\u00a0practices where riparian areas are involved. The RAM payment is a\u00a0onetime, up front, land rental representing 15 years times a yearly rental\u00a0rate\/acre for the non-CRP acres included in a CRP contract to protect\u00a0the riparian area, specific to the Vermillion River. A steering committee\u00a0representing Clay, McCook, Miner, Turner &amp; Yankton Counties ranked\u00a018 RAM applications taken from Clay, McCook, Turner &amp; Yankton\u00a0Counties in Fiscal Year 2010, potentially affecting 205 acres to enhance or protect the Vermillion River.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Missouri River Futures<\/strong><br \/>\nThe South Dakota\/Nebraska partnership group, Missouri River Futures, funds\u00a0a full time project staff to assist landowners with conservation planning along\u00a0the National Missouri Recreational River. Vermillion RC&amp;D Council staff,\u00a0along with over 30 other organizations, provide input to the Missouri River\u00a0Futures\u2019 overall project management through meetings and input on specific\u00a0projects. The 2009 summer steering committee meeting at Vermillion\u00a0included a river boat tour to show progress on river projects such as easements\u00a0with landowners, emergent sandbars construction, and river bank stabilization.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other Vermillion Watershed RC&amp;D Applicant Area 2010 Activities Included:<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>City of Parker Athletic Field Tree Planting<\/strong> \u2013 the Parker Athletic field project was installed with financial\u00a0assistance from a SD Department of Agriculture, Division of Forestry Grant. The project included the planting<br \/>\nof 38 trees of 8 varieties for a total project cost of $3711. Community members identified this tree planting as\u00a0an important need for the existing as well as for the recent athletic field complex expansion to provide shade,<br \/>\nwind protection and to improve the overall beauty for their community athletic complex gathering area.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Salem Urban &amp; Community Forestry project<\/strong> \u2013 was also completed with\u00a0assistance from a SD Department of Agriculture Division of Forestry\u00a0Grant. The project included the removal of two aged trees located on the\u00a0boulevard adjacent to city hall, and the installation of one \u201cCrimson\u00a0Cloud\u201d Hawthorne &amp; one \u201cFairview\u201d Norway Maple as their replacements. \u00a0In the Salem City Park, two \u201cAccolade\u201d Elm &amp; two \u201cFairview\u201d Norway Maple were planted to improve the recreational and aesthetic resources of the community park.<\/p>\n<p>Two mini grants, for $250 each, were awarded by the Vermillion Watershed\u00a0RC&amp;D Applicant Area Council to the Fedora Community 125th Celebration\u00a0to promote their celebration. The second grant went to the Canova Gang<br \/>\nBaseball Team to make improvements to the bleachers, and for steel siding to\u00a0improve their concession stand. Canova, a Miner County community of 140\u00a0residents, strives to promote and preserve its rich history of amateur baseball.\u00a0The home town park heralds Canova Gang SD State Amateur Baseball\u00a0Championships from 1966, 1971, 1979, and its most recent from 2009. Duane\u00a0Miller, Canova, a 2010 SD Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame inductee, has served\u00a0as a player, coach &amp; voice of the Canova Gang, including assisting with the\u00a0inception of the team in 1946.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vermillion Watershed RC&amp;D Council\u00a0Applicant Area Marketing Effort<br \/>\n<\/strong> The Vermillion Watershed (VW) RC&amp;D Applicant\u00a0Area secured funds to develop marketing materials to\u00a0inform area citizens of their mission and activities.\u00a0Funds of $2,000 were used to acquire a pull-up display,\u00a0create banners and to develop a brochure. The marketing\u00a0brochure was developed in January of 2010.
